Sketchbooks 1993 sketchbooks, pencil and felt pen "Dentist's & Visitors Painting," drawing and water color, 27 x 33 cms. 1999. Because of the detailed drawings of a dentist's equipment, I assumed he studied the equipment in his own dentist's office. His grandnephew, Dhaval Khakhar, sent me the following: "Hi Brian, He may have spent some time studying a dentist's equipment. It would be very difficult to zero down on dada's dentist, as he had perfect teeth. I just spoke with dadi [BK's sister in law and Dhaval's grandmother] about it, and she recalled an incident when dada had to undergo a surgery and the doctor asked him to remove his dentures for the surgery, as he could not believe those were his real teeth. He [BK] asked the doctor to try and pull - if they would come out." Is think this portrait is supposed to be the patient/victim. Bhupen must have smudged the mouth on purpose to show the discomfort.
