Hoshang Merchant – Forbidden Sex, Forbidden Texts

As India’s first openly gay poet, Hoshang Merchant wrote a remarkably perceptive and insightful account on Bhupen Khakhar, India’s first openly gay painter. It includes anecdotes about their long correspondences, poems written on and inspired by Bhupen Khakar, searing analysis of his painterly psyche and description of certain key paintings which can no longer be publicly viewed.

It is the last essay on the celebrated volume, titled : The Art of Bhupen Khakhar
Merchant, Hoshang. Forbidden sex, forbidden texts: New India’s gay poets. Routledge, 2009.
