"Man on Bed," 1970's 85.3 x 85.3 cms. The man on the bed is most probably Shri Shankerbhai Patel, Bhupen's intimate friend who, because of diabetes, became blind.

"Man on Bed", oil on canvas, 1970's, gift to Dr. Sunil M. Kothari (pictured), 85.3 x 85.3 cms. email from Dr. Kothari, 8 July 2014: "Dear Brian, Bhupen gave the painting to me long ago when I was staying at Ivorine building [1966 to 1977] in Mumbai. Then in 1980 I moved to Kolkata as a Professor of Dance at Rabindra Bharati University. The painting travelled with me from Mumbai to Delhi before I went to Kolkata. And I had deposited it with my friend D...as I had no place of mine to hang it. He promised to take utmost care, and he did and returned it to me when I got Asiad Village flat in 2004. Since then it is with me. The person lying in bed may be someone he liked, but am not sure. I do not recollect anything more."

Untitled, 1974, lithograph, 33 x 22 cm, 24/50. In 1980 Ms. Alkazi of Art Heritage sold this work to a client who in 2012 sold it back to Ms. Allana of Art Heritage who sold it to me in 2013. In his early works Bhupen signed in English as Bhupen Khakhar or Khakhar, Bhupen.

Richard Bartholomew wrote a review of the show at Black Partridge Gallery where this work was on display, in the Times of India, 26 October 1976: "The result is that there is a whimsical mode, a quality determined both by Bhupen's naive style, which is sketchy and angular, and is in effect amateurish, and also because of the apparently innocent point of view."
